Can you please give me some information on a bronze casting of Pandore by Gautier & Cie. The only record I can find on Gautier as a foundry is as a maker of bronze bells (church's etc) in the first half of the 19th century. Do you think this cast is before 1856 when the model was cast by Labrouë? My version is the same one as that in Geneva's Musée d'art et d'histoire (« pudique »).

I’m glad you enjoyed the Pandore « impudique » article. Much of the credit for it goes to the co-author Jacques de Caso. We do mention there, in note 5, a Pandore cast by Gautier, 42 cm. high, sold 22 June 2000 by Galerías Louis C. Morton in Mexico. This Gautier must be the same as yours and may be one of the two listed in Bernard Metman’s repertory of 19th-century founders published by Jacques de Caso in Archives de l’Art français (Nouvelle période, Tome XXX, 1989):

Gautier, Fr. 3, rue des Fossés-Montmartre. Atelier fondé en 1850. Obtient une médaille de 1re classe en 1855 avec des surtouts de table, des groupes, des statues, bronzes d’art et d’ameublement.

Unfortunately, none of this helps determine whether or not your Pandore cast by Gautier predates Labrouë. You might ask Elizabeth Lebon, author of a Dictionnaire des fondeurs de bronze d’art, who has been very helpful to me in identifying other founders.
